Traditionally Docked Breeds

corgi puppies before n after.jpg

As of June 2022, the American Kennel Club (AKC) registers 197 dog breeds. Eighty-three (42%) of them are traditionally docked. Some, like Corgis, are graded harshly in competitions for not having properly docked tails.

Excerpt from the AKC Pembroke Welch Corgi Breed Standard:

Tail - Docked as short as possible without being indented. Occasionally a puppy is born with a natural dock, which if sufficiently short, is acceptable. A tail up to two inches in length is allowed, but if carried high tends to spoil the contour of the topline.

Here's the full AKC Pembroke Welsh Corgi Breed Standard. The AKC sometimes adjusts their listings to address public sentiment. But the traditions stand and the observed Standard parameters remain in tact.

The AKC adds new traditionally docked breeds almost every year.

When they stop, the extra space below this line will not be needed.
